Boalsburg museum discusses impact of COVID-19 on tourism
BOALSBURG, Pa (WJAC) — Tourism is one of Pennsylvania’s largest industries and has also been among the hardest hit this year by the pandemic, especially now during the summer travel season.
One Centre County tourist destination says that so far this year, they have barely had any visitors.
The Boal Mansion and Columbus Chapel is the original home of the family that founded the historic village of Boalsburg in Centre County.
The family had immense wealth and influence in the area, and normally this time of year, they are quite busy.
“All businesses are struggling right now,” the owners said.
Visitors normally come from around the world to view the Boal Mansion grounds, and earlier this year a new performing arts center was planned to open on the grounds.
Inside the museum, everything from documents tied the explorer Christopher Columbus, to recently discovered drawings done by one of the family’s ancestors, who was a renowned architect.
Upstairs in the mansion, local sports history is also among the displays.
The mansion operates on tight budget, about $100,000 annually, but with this summer’s setbacks other marketing options are being considered.
A special fundraiser is in the works, a unique yard sale, with historical items being sold.
“We are trying to set up year-round attractions, as part of the goal of bringing people to Happy Valley.”
